Why this route

A loop through the range country.

The snow peaks of the Minya Konka range seen across the open water of Langgatso lake
Minya Konka over Langgatso · the turn-around view of Day 05

This is the compact version of our western Sichuan line: six days that still reach four mountain areas and two kinds of Tibetan life. The loop runs west to the valleys of Mt. Siguniang, drops into the farming villages of Danba, climbs to the nomad grassland of Tagong, and finishes on the high trails under Minya Konka before the road home.

Every night is in a bed and every walking day is different in character — a valley boardwalk, a village hillside, a holy lake, a ridgeline, a high horse trail. The walking is medium-paced and adjustable; the one big day is the Tagong ridge, and even that can be walked in the descending direction.

It is a private departure on your dates. Winter runs too, cold as it is — some walking days change with the snow, and the guide will say what is and is not walkable before you commit.

The route

The line.

One loop: west over Balang Pass, south through Danba and Tagong, and home from Xinduqiao. Four overnight stops.

  1. Days 01–02Siguniang → Danbaa valley boardwalk and a village hillside
  2. Days 03–04Tagongthe holy lake, then the grassland ridge
  3. Days 05–06Xinduqiao → Chengduthe Konka west trail, then the road east

Day by day

The six days.

Five walking days around one loop. Distances flex with the season and with you — the ranges below are the honest ones.

  1. Day 01

    Balang Pass and Shuangqiao Valley

    Chengdu → Mt. Siguniang

An eight o'clock start and four hours of road to Rilong at 3,100 metres, over the Balang tunnel near 3,800. The afternoon walks Shuangqiao Valley from its head: the park bus to the end of the 35-kilometre valley, then the quiet boardwalk back along the river under the peaks.

The first 8 kilometres are the best of it, flat and almost always down. Walk more or less as you feel — the day is deliberately easy for the altitude.

    • OvernightRilong, 3,100 m
    • Drive4 hours
    • On foot5–12 km, easy
  2. Day 02

    A village afternoon at Zhonglu

    Siguniang → Danba

Three hours of road to Danba and an easy afternoon in Zhonglu — a hillside Tibetan village of stone houses and orchards below ruined watchtowers, among the most authentic in the province. Four to eight kilometres of paths between the hamlets and the viewpoints.

The night at 2,200 metres is a deliberate low point in the loop — a rest for the legs and a reminder that Kham is farming country too.

    • OvernightDanba, 2,200 m
    • Drive3 hours
    • On foot4–8 km, easy
  3. Day 03

    The holy lake under Yala

    Danba → Tagong

The snow-capped Mt. Yala massif rising above forested slopes
The holy mountain · glaciers on its north face all the way to the lake

An hour and a half to the Mt. Yala park, a small bus to the base at 3,750 metres, then the steep climb — walking or on hired horse — to Yala Yumtso at 4,050 metres, the holy lake sitting directly under the glaciers of the 5,820-metre north face.

Strong walkers push over the pass beyond to two lakes at 4,200 metres. The road continues to Tagong afterwards, visiting Huiyuan Temple if the afternoon allows.

    • OvernightTagong, 3,800 m
    • Drive2.5 hours
    • On foot6–14 km, challenging
  4. Day 04

    The grassland ridgeline

    Tagong

The full Tagong day: half an hour at the Buddhist school below the town, a steep pull onto the ridge, then the long rises and dips above the grassland with the Minya Konka, Lamoshe and Yala ranges stacked on the horizon.

Fifteen kilometres or so across most of a day, ending with a descent to a village pick-up. Walked from the far end it becomes a descending walk and an easier one — the guide will set the direction to suit the group.

    • OvernightTagong, 3,400 m
    • On footAbout 15 km, 7–8 hours
    • TerrainGrassland ridge
  5. Day 05

    The west trail

    Xinduqiao · Minya Konka west

Snow peaks and glaciers of the Minya Konka range rising over a bare moraine valley
The west trail's whole argument, in one view

Out of Xinduqiao onto the west-side horse trails of the Minya Konka range: a day above 4,000 metres with the whole range in front of you, turning at a lake and coming back the same high line.

Around 7 kilometres of actual walking but thin air and steep sections make it a strenuous morning. Which exact trail is walkable moves with the season — the guide picks the best line going.

    • OvernightXinduqiao area, 3,700 m
    • Drive3+ hours
    • On footAbout 7 km, strenuous
  6. Day 06

The pass, the town, the road

    Xinduqiao → Chengdu

An early start and the road east: over the Zheduo pass above Kangding, a stop in town when time allows — a proper look at a Khampa town, if you have not had one — and into Chengdu by five or six in the evening. The tour ends at your hotel.
