Why this route

Big mountains, high trails, warm beds.

A trekker walking a high trail below the snow peaks of the Minya Konka range in July
The west trail above 4,000 m · big views, no roads

Kangding sits at the gateway of the Minya Konka range, and the mountains around it carry a network of high trails with open views — of the Konka range, the Lamoshe group and the holy pyramid of Mt. Yala. This trip walks the three best of them in five days: the west trail above 4,000 metres, the ridgeline above the nomad town of Tagong, and the lake basin under Yala's glaciers.

It is built for active travellers who want the views without giving up beds: every night is in a hotel, every day is a different mountain, and the routes run above 3,500 metres from the first morning — the pace is set accordingly.

It is a private departure on your dates, available all year round. Which exact trail each day uses moves with the season — snow, mud and access decide — and the guide picks the best line for the conditions.

The route

The line.

West to Kangding, then three mountain days on three different massifs, and home. Two hotel bases.

  1. Day 01Chengdu → Xinduqiaoacclimatisation walk by the Zheduo pass, 4,000 m
  2. Days 02–04The three trailsKonka west, Tagong ridge, Yala lakes
  3. Day 05Tagong → Chengduthe monastery, then the long road east

Day by day

The five days.

Three walking days, one on each mountain. Distances are given as ranges — the shorter end is always respectable.

  1. Day 01

    Over Zheduo, walk slow

    Chengdu → Xinduqiao

Three to four hours on the expressway to Kangding for lunch, then up to the Zheduo pass for an orientation walk by the lake near 4,000 metres — the point is hours at altitude, not distance. A quieter alternative spends the walk in the Yele valley at 3,800 metres.

Down to Xinduqiao for the night at 3,400 metres and an early end to the day: the first big walk is tomorrow.

    • OvernightXinduqiao hotel, 3,400 m
    • Drive6–7 hours
    • On foot4–8 km, easy
  2. Day 02

    The whole range, all day

    Minya Konka west

Snow peaks of the Minya Konka range above a green valley with a turquoise river and low mist
The range from the west trail · the day's whole backdrop

Out from the hotel to the west-side trails, walking the day with the entire Minya Konka range in front of you — snow peaks, valleys and villages at 4,000 metres and above, sometimes steep, always open.

Fourteen or twenty kilometres, chosen to the season and to you. The night is back at the same hotel: no packing, an early dinner, and the second big walk tomorrow.

    • OvernightXinduqiao hotel, 3,400 m
    • On foot14–20 km, strenuous
    • TerrainHigh trails above 4,000 m
  3. Day 03

    The grassland ridge

    Tagong

An hour out to the nomad grassland of Tagong, half an hour at the Buddhist school, then the walk: a steep start, then the long rises and dips of the ridgeline with Tagong, the Konka range, the Lamoshe mountains and the Yala group all visible at once.

Fifteen to eighteen kilometres, ending with a drop into a village where the vehicle waits. Walked the other way — high start, descending ridge — the day is gentler; say which you would rather and the guide will set it up.

    • OvernightTagong hotel, 3,700 m
    • Drive1 hour
    • On foot15–18 km, medium
  4. Day 04

The lakes under the holy mountain

    Mt. Yala

The sister lakes below Mt. Yala, green water in a brown mountain basin
The sister lakes above Yala Yumtso · the extra 2.5 km, if the day allows

A park bus to the base of Mt. Yala at 3,750 metres, then the steep three-kilometre climb — on foot or on hired horse — to the lake called Yala Yumtso at 4,050 metres, under the thick glaciers of the holy mountain's north face.

A pass beyond the lake leads to two more lakes at 4,200 metres and the widest views of the trip. On the way back to Tagong the Huiyuan Temple makes a stop when time allows.

    • OvernightTagong hotel, 3,700 m
    • On foot12–16 km, challenging
    • TerrainSteep trail, lake basin
  5. Day 05

    The monastery, then home

    Tagong → Chengdu

The morning belongs to Tagong Monastery — founded along Princess Wencheng's road to Lhasa in the seventh century, and one of the most respected Sakya seats in Kham. Then eight hours of road back to Chengdu over the Zheduo pass, arriving in the late afternoon. The tour ends at your hotel.

    • EndsChengdu, late afternoon
    • Drive8 hours
    • MorningTagong Monastery

Along the way

What the high trails hold.

A mountain-view trip first — but the grassland and the crags carry their own residents.

The ridges and basins

Konka west trail · Tagong ridge · Yala lakes

High
Marmots · pikas · choughs
Medium
Himalayan blue sheep · Tibetan fox
Low
White-lipped deer · golden eagle
Rare
Snow leopard

Blue sheep hold the crags around the Yala basin; the grassland foxes are bold in the evenings. The rest keep their distance.

Chances are field estimates, not promises. The trails run above 3,500 metres throughout.
