Chengdu after dark.

Around four hours from late afternoon into the evening, walked while the city changes shift: teahouses emptying, grills lighting up, the old quarters switching their lanterns on. It ends at the table — a Sichuan hotpot dinner, seated, ordered for you.

Why the evening

The other shift.

Lantern-lit traditional rooftops above a busy Chengdu food street at night
The lanterns go on before the eating does

Chengdu runs two eating shifts, and most visitors only ever see the first. The evening one belongs to the street grills and the skewer counters, the teahouse crowds thinning out, and the old quarters after their lanterns come on — the version of these streets people photograph but rarely eat in.

The walk opens in late afternoon, while there is still daylight for the park and the lanes, and follows the city into the night: stalls that only get going after dark, food streets that read entirely differently under lanterns, and the queues that form outside the counters locals rate over the famous ones.

It finishes seated. Sichuan hotpot is the city's table of record — a shared pot of broth, half mild and half fierce if you ask for it, everything sliced thin and cooked by you, at your pace, with the guide doing the ordering and the explaining. No dinner reservation needed afterwards; no dinner possible, either.

The route

Daylight, lanterns, hotpot.

One loop on foot, hotel to hotel, timed to the change of shift rather than the clock.

  1. Stop 1People's Parkthe day shift winding down — tea if the weather is on your side
  2. Stop 2Kuanzhai Alley & Jinlithe old quarters as the lanterns come on, stalls and street grills working the evening
  3. Stop 3The hotpot tablea seated dinner to finish — the pot ordered for the group, the guide handling the broth

Hour by hour

The evening.

Roughly four hours, late afternoon into the evening — exact start shifts with the season so the lantern-lighting lands mid-walk.

  1. Evening

Into the night, ending at the table

    People's Park → Kuanzhai Alley → Jinli → hotpot

Pickup at your hotel in the late afternoon, while the day shift is still on. People's Park first, quieter than its afternoon self, then on to the old quarters as the light drops — Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli change character completely after dark, and the evening stall line-up is not the same city that runs the morning walk.

Tastings are bought as you go, with the grills and skewer counters doing the heavy lifting. The walk ends seated at a hotpot table: the broth chosen for the group's tolerance, the dishes ordered to cover the classics, and the guide staying through dinner to run the pot and translate the menu you would never have ordered from.

Not a hotpot person, or already have tonight's dinner planned? The walk runs without the seated finish too — say so in the brief and we will swap the last hour.
